Clint Small, Jr. Middle School

Matthew Nelson is excited to serve as the principal for Austin's flagship middle school destination. Prior to taking over the helm at Small, he served as the principal at Pease Elementary school for two years. There, he created numerous STEAM programs and initiatives similar to the courses offered here at Small. Before becoming a principal with AISD, he worked at O.Henry Middle School as an Assistant Principal, Special Education Teacher, Advisory Coordinator and coached every sport under the sun.

Mr. Nelson's philosophy about taking care of the child first, and ensuring teachers, parents, and staff value whole-child education above all else, make him the perfect champion for the unique and diverse programming here at Small.  Small Middle School is all about offering the total "Middle School Experience" to all students and we are constantly exploring new ways to engage our students.  Whether as part of our Green Tech Academy, our Dual Language program, our Project Lead the Way courses, or even our award winning Fine Arts classes, Mr. Nelson and Small work hard to ensure each child feels accepted, challenged, and that they are provided every opportunity to excel.

Mr. Nelson comes from a family of educators and is honored to be a part of the Southwest Austin community.  Having lived in this area for over 15 years, he knows the culture, the clientele, the climate, and can even navigate the traffic circle at the Y.

Ms. Malott has spent the last thirty three years in Texas as a learner and a teacher. After moving around the country during her childhood, she realized early in her college studies she wanted to be an educator. While in college, she swam competitively and began teaching and coaching young children. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, her first classroom was outside as the Public Programs Coordinator at the Austin Nature Center where she led and developed curriculum for summer camps and school group programs. It was during this time that she really developed her love for experiential and project-based curriculum.

After starting a family, she relocated to an indoor classroom where she taught science and English Language Arts for seven years in Grapevine-Colleyville and Hays CISD before becoming an Instructional Strategist. Focused on improving student engagement and learning in this role, Ms. Malott completed her Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership from Texas State University. Her first role as a campus administrator was at Small Middle School as an Assistant Principal. She spent her last five years as an Academic Dean at Lehman High School.

This school year she returned to Small Middle School as the Green Tech Academy Director. The most exciting part of her return to this new role at Small is working every day with The Dream Team. She is excited to lead the mission and vision of the Green Tech Academy while continuing to integrate new industry and innovations at the campus level. In her spare time she is involved in many service learning projects with the Lions Club, traveling and taking pictures, and spending as much time as possible outside with her husband and two teenage children.

De'Sean Lynette Roby began her teaching career as a long term substitute for Blackshear Elementary and Lamar Middle School. Her first teaching position was 4th and 6th grade at Wimbush and Starrett Elementary in Arlington, Texas. Her career in Austin has been entirely in Title I schools, spending nine years at J.E. Pearce Middle school, teaching 6th grade ELA and Social Studies.

Her last five years have been at Gus Garcia Middle School, where she joined the faculty as ELA instructional coach, she was later promoted to Academic Dean in 2010. Ms. Roby, often called just "Roby" enjoys working with teachers and students and looks forward to being a member of the Clint Small Middle School community.

Patricia Estep (Patti) is a proud product of Austin Independent School District. Patti and her husband of 18 years, keep very busy raising two teenagers, a 13yr old daughter entering 7th grade and an 18yr old son entering the 12th grade.

After graduating from Texas State University, back when it was still called Southwest Texas State, she began her teaching career as a middle school math teacher for the next 10 years at Martin MS and Bedichek MS. She was then given the opportunity to join the Department of English Language Learners for AISD. In her roles as ELL/Math curriculum specialist, Elementary Dual Language specialist and the Middle School Dual Language coordinator she learned how to work with teachers across the district at all grade levels and content areas.
