Cougar News – Week of 11/18/19

What's happening at Small Middle School

Week of 11/18/19 – 11/22/19

The blistery week that was is culminating with much better weather for your weekend. I’m sure if you polled all our students, and staff and y’all as well, everybody would much rather sacrifice a 2 hour late start on Tuesday in order to have a weekend with expected sunshine and temperatures in the 60’s. We are thankful we did not lose a day of instruction due to the weather and that AISD put the safety of our families and staff first. If for some reason you did not receive the 3:45 a.m. call/text/email/smoke-signal put out by the district, send an email to Mrs. Diane Ewing and she can make sure you’re good to go.

Make sure your student knows that even though Zombie Fun Run is nigh and soon we’ll all be on a 9 day break for Thanksgiving, we plan on teaching and learning until 3:40 on the 22nd. We’ve way too much to cover to not take advantage of our time together and will expect our students to treat next week like any other week. With the one exception being when we have them dress up like Zombies on Friday and let them spend about an hour chasing each other around and celebrating.

Speaking of Zombies and running amuck, we recently put in an order for class sets of all 12 of the Cirque du Freak novels for our 8th grade ELA students. The kids love reading this book and are craving more and we dare not tell them “no” because it is not part of the AISD provided curriculum. We use the money from our Fun Run to fund items like this for our students. Oftentimes it’s hard to get kids excited about reading and any time they are, we have to act fast before the feeling wanes. Our 8th grade English teachers saw how they responded to the stories and immediately started planning on ways to build on their enthusiasm. Thanks to money raised from Fun Run pasts, we can now get these books in their hands quickly.

Get the word out to all your contacts about our Fun Run and tell them the money we raise goes directly to our kids! We use it to enhance their middle school experience and to allow our teachers to create based on what is best for our kids, not based on what they’ve been given. Inform all you know that a campus knows best what is best for that campus and should be able to provide for its students in order to provide the most engaging, exciting education possible. It’s not tough to imagine what we want to do for our students; the obstacle is the money we need to follow through.

We can continue to put kids first in regards to planning and programming with your support.

Thanks, and I hope to see as many of y’all as possible next week for the run.
