Cougar Nation-

We are so thankful your student made it back to us this week, albeit a tad groggy and suffering from tryptophan overload. We gave them a few days to get their bearings, then got down to the business of assessing how well we’ve done this first semester through MOY (Middle of the Year) benchmarks. Once we get the data, we then see what our shortcomings were and work hard to address them. We use the data for whole group instruction and as a way to bridge any individual gaps we uncover. Again, we prefer these tests any day over the STAAR as they give us a whole semester to improve whereas the STAAR is akin to a post mortem report.

CAT Day Part Deux: On Wednesday, 12/11, we will be having our second CAT Day of the semester. Students will report to the same first period class they did last session, with a few exceptions, and can expect similar engaging and exciting opportunities all day long. After the morning session, we’ll let the teachers pore over the MOY data and we’ll treat our student to the Fine Arts Winter Assembly and a special treat in the gym. We love it when our kids get to perform for one another and know the audience, and the performers, will enjoy the opportunity.

Here is the schedule for the afternoon portion of the CAT Day. Each student’s morning schedule will be unique, but the afternoon will consist of kids traveling with their assigned grade levels. We went to every effort to ensure any student who did not get a chance to select a course last session got the opportunity to do so this time, but in order for that to happen emails (to parent/guardians and students) had to be opened. Next semester we will be utilizing the FIT system for course selection. This is the same system that every single high school in AISD uses (for a new class each day), so it’s another way we’re preparing our kids for secondary school success.

We trust you and yours had a restful break and are as thankful as we are for this glorious weather we’ve been having. Since the days are drawing shorter and shorter, we suggest you and the brood spend quality time getting some Vitamin D this weekend.

There’s a lot going on these next few weeks. To ensure you don’t miss out, check our website regularly and peruse this newsletter in its entirety.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

During your child’s PRIDE class, he, she or they will participate in the Suicide Prevention lesson on Tuesday, December 10. The lesson is age appropriate and has been viewed by our Licensed Mental Health Professional, Secondary Counseling Coordinator, Social Emotional Learning Specialist, and our administration. You are welcome to preview the lesson by visiting the Small Middle School front office and viewing it on a computer set up with the Ppt presentation.

If you do want your child to participate in these lessons, no further action is required. If you do not want your child to participate in this, please print, sign and date this form, and return it to your child’s PRIDE teacher. Students will be provided an alternate activity in a different location on campus. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s counselor.
