You and your family have been quarantined, and working and learning from home, since April 6th…officially. However, for many of us the abrupt change of schedule began effectively on March 13th. Therefore, you’ve had either a little over 2 months or about a month and 2 weeks to figure out your family’s schedule and work all the kinks out. That being said, there is still time to figure out the best way for you to get your student involved and on task and for you to be able to get some work done yourself, before Summer arrives.

That’s right; Summer. For the first time in many years, Summer will seem like an arbitrary date for most of us, as we are still amidst stay-at-home ordinances and travel and camps are not readily available. June 8th will mirror May 8th which will look like April 8th and so on. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

My advice to you and yours is to keep the same schedule (if it’s working that is) you have today for the Summer. Meaning, try and get your student to continue to put forth effort and energy in regards to his or her learning up to 3 hours a day. There’s no reason to cease and desist all learning opportunities for what accounts to merely a change in the temperature. Keep your student on their schedule and encourage them to keep learning and take even more charge of their education. The “Summer Slide” is a real thing that affects all students during this time of year; imagine what damage it can inflict upon us after having been away from campus since March 12th? Do what you can to keep your kids engaged and learning. It’s not only best practice, but a terrific way to escape the monotony which is Covid.

Learning From Home: In an effort to reduce the Summer Slide and keep your student alert and engaged during these next few months, AISD has extended their “Home Learning” site all the way up into August. You can have your student visit the AISD Home Learning Site and work on valuable skills to better prepare them for next year. My advice is to have them not only work on their current grade level, but sneak a peek at what they’ll be doing next year. We are also excited to say that iStation, IXL, and iReady (in your student’s cloud) will be available all summer long as well. For iReady in particular, it is imperative your student take a diagnostic exam prior to access to all the lessons, so please connect with your math teacher as to how to get that done.

Whether or not you utilize any of the above, or activities from our teachers, is completely up to you and your family. I know our kindergartner will follow the same routine she’s been following since March as both my partner and I will still need to work for our respective employers and we do not wish for YouTube and the TV to take the place of reading and math. The choice ultimately lies with you and yours, however, do keep in mind that the positives of continuing to learn over the summer greatly outweigh the negatives.

Locker Room Clean Out: Our amazing coaches have gone into each PE and Athletics locker and bagged and tagged all contents. Now, they are ready to disseminate them to students and families this week. Read below for how to head up to campus to pick up your PE/Athletics Locker contents on May 21st:

  • The dedicated pick-up area will be the bus lane at Clint Small MS.
  • Please do not enter any buildings.
  • Please do not arrive before your approved time nor remain after.
  • Do not visit the campus if you or a member of your household feels ill or has been within 6 feet of someone outside of your household who is ill within the previous 14 days.
  • Adhere to the physical distance requirements of at least 6 feet from people outside your household at all times.
  • Arrive with your own mask or cloth face covering and wear it when on school property.

Due to Covid-19 our Yearbook printing has been delayed. Once they get the facility back up and running and they print our yearbooks, we will let you know when we have them and when you can come pick it up.

School work this week


The last day to turn in any work for failing grades this semester is Friday, 22nd. If your student is not failing, the teachers wanted to remind you that academic work is still being assigned this week. Next week will likely be bonus work in each class. Last day of school is 5/28.

We do not have school supply lists for next year yet. Each teacher will have their own set of supplies they will require. Since you won’t know what teachers you have yet, you won’t be able to buy your supplies until school starts again.

But, if you see a good sale, feel free to stock up on the basics you will need…

Pencils, Sharpeners, Pens, Spirals Composition books, highlighters and Glue Sticks are all a safe bet. If you see them on sale this summer grab them, you will need them. 

School supplies are to be left at home and the student is to restock as needed to keep what they need in their backpack.

Except Tissue and Hand Sanitizer –  we need a lot of that all year long.

Does Your Student Take High School Courses?


All parents/guardians for middle school students currently enrolled in a high school course will be given the opportunity to withdraw their child from the high school credit course either by completing a survey emailed by the district by Wednesday, May 13,2020 or by consulting with the campus counselor on or before Wednesday, May 20, 2020. This survey provides you the opportunity to withdraw your student from a high school course or leave them scheduled. Your decision cannot be altered once it is finalized . The resulting transcript entries cannot be changed.


Any student who is withdrawn from the course will have an appropriate schedule change to a non-high school credit course to reflect this decision. Furthermore, any student who withdraws from a course required for graduation will have to retake the course at a later time. 


Please refer to the AISD email titled “Action Needed Regarding Your Student’s Grades” for specific grading information.

Remote Fantasy Workshop (Summer 2020)

Provided by an avid fantasy hobbyist, this unique course will include multiple outlets for your creativity and problem-solving skills. Working live with the instructor and classmates provides everyone the chance for immediate constructive feedback as you work. Beginners and experienced students of all ages are welcome.Learn and improve sketching basics, modeling techniques, world and gameplay design as well as the option of playing an extended game of Dungeons and Dragons. 


Mr. Jeansonne is an experienced teacher and artist who brings three decades of science and aesthetics to the experience. 


This will be a real workshop experience with the opportunity to engage with others, share work, and receive 1:1 instructor feedback both during classtime and/or privately.


Included daily topics include:

  • Pencil drawing fantasy characters and creatures
  • Figure modelling (make your own miniatures!)
  • Character building and fantasy world design- mapping and creative writing
  • Collaboration
  • Gameplay – if desired, there will be the option of getting involved in a Dungeons and Dragons (5th Edition) game. This will take significantly more time, so will be offered up to twice a week, depending on interest
  • Tailored activities and time frames to suit the interests and priorities of the class members


Fee: $100 per household includes 8 days (tbd) of instruction – 2 hours per class minimum.


A complete list of materials needed and a questionnaire considering dates and times will be sent individually to those interested.

Classes will need a minimum of 8-10 /”customers” to begin. 

Gameplay (up to 2 times per week) based on number of interested players (ages 11 to 100 – special requests considered) . This game is such a great way to get interesting social interaction, I highly recommend it.

Bowie Transistion Camp Cancelled

In light of campus closures, Bowie has canceled Camp Bowie Express, the transition camp planned for rising freshmen on May 2 and May 9. Bowie hopes to reschedule this important event in late summer, but that is contingent on the progress of campus construction and the status of the COVID-19-related community health guidelines. The distribution of the Class of 2024 t-shirts has also been postponed. The Camp Bowie Express teachers and student volunteers look forward to meeting the newest Bulldogs in a few months!

Cougar Family in need

Fellow Small 6th and 8th grade students have suffered the loss of their father. This devastating loss has brought about more challenges for this family during the current crisis and the family is needing help with basic necessities during COVID and funeral expenses. Mom lost her job due to COVID and the family is having a really hard time.

Oak Hill Elementary Serving Food

AISD will be offering curbside meals at Oak Hill elementary starting on Monday 4/27 from 11-1. We will be offering re-heat lunches, and breakfast for the next day. On Friday we will serve weekend packs with 3 breakfasts, and 3 lunches. 

We will be serving kids up to 19 years old, and they need to either be in the car, or we need proof which can be in the form of a report card, pulling up students names from the AISD website on a phone, or birth certificate.

AISD Crisis Support Fund

Together with the district, the Austin Ed Fund is announcing the AISD Crisis Support Fund – an effort to support our school communities by supplementing access to food services, health programs and remote learning. We will be closely monitoring the greatest need during this ever-changing situation and responding to new needs.

  • Meal Service – Additional costs of meal service including staffing and expansion of meal service to serve caregivers with daily breakfast and lunch.
  • Telehealth Medical Appointment Fees – Vouchers for fees for visits for students who are uninsured, ineligible for Medicaid and the free and reduced meal program.
  • Support for Remote Learning – Supplies, devices and internet connections for students and teachers to connect and learn.
  • Support for the social and emotional health of students, faculty and staff.

We are continuously monitoring needs and gaps as this situation is changing rapidly. Donations to the crisis fund will enable the Ed Fund to be responsive to the needs of our students and families during this challenging time.

Immediate Housing Needs (Necesidades inmediatas de vivienda)

Austin City Council approved an ordinance, and the Mayor adopted an Order, supporting tenants directly adversely impacted by COVID-19. Tenants who cannot pay rent will have 60 days before a landlord can proceed with eviction. Reminder: rent will still be due. The ordinance requires a landlord to provide a “notice of proposed eviction” prior to issuing a notice to vacate. The ordinance applies to both commercial and residential tenants.

The Travis County Justices of the Peace have a standing order posted indicating there will be a eviction settings held until after April 1, 2020.

The Neighborhood Housing and Community Development (NHCD) Department offers information and referrals to assist impacted community members with immediate housing needs including resources for homeowners and resources for renters.

Avoiding Mortgage Foreclosure website provides information about refinancing or modifying mortgage loans, lowering payments, or other solutions to avoid foreclosure.

Rental Payment Assistance website provides resources to help pay rent and utilities.

Eviction Resources are available to assist residents with legal assistance, emergency grants for rent or utilities, alternate housing, short-term motel vouchers, or placement in a local shelter.

Austin Tenants Council provides counseling related to the eviction process, tenant-landlord issues, mediates disputes, provides workshops, and identifies fair housing issues to resolve or minimize discriminatory housing practices.
